Hiragana is the backbone of Japanese. These words are high-frequency, short, and packed with real utility. As you read, speak each word aloud and try the example sentences. Then remix them with new vocabulary to build confidence and fluency.

• わたし (watashi) – I / me
  あなた (anata) – you (singular)
  あなたたち (anata-tachi) – you (plural)
  わたしたち (watashi-tachi) – we
  かれ (kare) – he
  かのじょ (kanojo) – she
  かれら (kare-ra) – they (men/mixed)
  かのじょたち (kanojo-tachi) – they (women)
  それ (sore) – it / that (thing)

Note: In natural Japanese, people often use a person’s name + さん (san) instead of “you.”

• わたし は がくせい です。
  Watashi wa gakusei desu. – I am a student.

• あなた は にほんご が すき です か。
  Anata wa nihongo ga suki desu ka? – Do you like Japanese?

• かれ は まいにち はたらきます。
  Kare wa mainichi hatarakimasu. – He works every day.

• かのじょ は りょうり が じょうず です。
  Kanojo wa ryouri ga jouzu desu. – She is good at cooking.

• わたしたち は ともだち です。
  Watashitachi wa tomodachi desu. – We are friends.

• みんな ありがとう！
  Minna arigatou! – Thanks, everyone!

[Person] は [Noun/Adjective] です。
Easy structure for “X is Y.” Replace freely:
わたし は げんき です。(Watashi wa genki desu.) – I’m well.

• きょう (kyou) – today

• あした (ashita) – tomorrow

• きのう (kinou) – yesterday

• いま (ima) – now

• いつ (itsu) – when

• とき (toki) – time / moment

• きょう は いそがしい です。
  Kyou wa isogashii desu. – I’m busy today.

• あした がっこう に いきます。

• きのう は やすみ でした。
  Kinou wa yasumi deshita. – I had a day off yesterday.

• いま はん に あいましょう。
  Ima han ni aimashou. – Let’s meet at half past now (e.g., 12:30).

• いつ いきます か。
  Itsu ikimasu ka? – When will you go?

• ひま な とき に よみます。
  Hima na toki ni yomimasu. – I read when I’m free.

• [Time word] + [Place] に + [Verb]
  あした えき に いきます。(Ashita eki ni ikimasu.) – I’ll go to the station tomorrow.

• いえ (ie) – house

• くるま (kuruma) – car

• て (te) – hand

• あし (ashi) – leg / foot

• みず (mizu) – water

• ごはん (gohan) – meal / rice

• がっこう (gakkou) – school

• わたし の いえ は ここ です。
  Watashi no ie wa koko desu. – My house is here.

• かれ の くるま は おおきい です。
  Kare no kuruma wa ookii desu. – His car is big.

• て を あらって ください。
  Te o aratte kudasai. – Please wash your hands.

• あし が いたい です。
  Ashi ga itai desu. – My leg/foot hurts.

• みず を のみます。
  Mizu o nomimasu. – I drink water.

• きょう の ごはん は おいしい です。
  Kyou no gohan wa oishii desu. – Today’s meal is delicious.

• あの みせ は すき です。
  Ano mise wa suki desu. – I like that shop.

• がっこう に いきたい です。
  Gakkou ni ikitai desu. – I want to go to school.

[Noun] を [Verb] (object marker を o)
みず を ください。(Mizu o kudasai.) – Water, please.

• コーヒー を のみます か。
  Koohii o nomimasu ka? – Will you drink coffee?

• えいが を みる の が すき です。
  Eiga o miru no ga suki desu. – I like watching movies.

• せんせい の はなし を ききます。
  Sensei no hanashi o kikimasu. – I listen to the teacher.

• にほんご を はなします。
  Nihongo o hanashimasu. – I speak Japanese.

• べんきょう を します。
  Benkyou o shimasu. – I study.

• つくえ の うえ に ほん が ある。
  Tsukue no ue ni hon ga aru. – There is a book on the desk.

• へや に いぬ が いる。
  Heya ni inu ga iru. – There’s a dog in the room.

• じかん に おそい です。
  Jikan ni osoi desu. – I’m late.

• その いぬ は すごく かわいい。

おいしい ごはん (oishii gohan) – delicious meal

• は (wa) – topic marker

• が (ga) – subject marker

• を (o) – object marker

• に (ni) – location / direction marker

• で (de) – place of action / means

• から (kara) – from / because

• まで (made) – until / up to

• と (to) – and / with

• も (mo) – also

• けど (kedo) – but

• は (wa) marks the topic:
  わたし は がくせい です。
  Watashi wa gakusei desu. – As for me, I’m a student.

• が (ga) marks the subject/new info:
  そこ に ねこ が いる。
  Soko ni neko ga iru. – There’s a cat there.

• を (o) marks the object:
  みず を のむ。
  Mizu o nomu. – Drink water.

• に (ni) destination/time:
  がっこう に いく。
  Gakkou ni iku. – Go to school.

• で (de) place/means:
  いえ で べんきょう する。
  Ie de benkyou suru. – Study at home.

• から / まで from… / until…:
  きょう から あした まで やすみ。
  Kyou kara ashita made yasumi. – Off from today until tomorrow.

• と with/and:
  かのじょ と えいが を みる。
  Kanojo to eiga o miru. – Watch a movie with her.

• も also/too:
  わたし も いく。
  Watashi mo iku. – I’ll go, too.

• けど but/however (softens):
  いきたい けど、いそがしい。
  Ikitai kedo, isogashii. – I want to go, but I’m busy.

A: いま、みず を ください。
Ima, mizu o kudasai. – Water now, please.
B: はい。ごはん は どう です か。
Hai. Gohan wa dou desu ka? – Sure. How about a meal?
A: いい です。おいしい ケーキ は あります か。
Ii desu. Oishii keeki wa arimasu ka? – I’m good. Do you have a tasty cake?
B: はい、あります。
Hai, arimasu. – Yes, we do.

A: わたし は がっこう に いく。いっしょ に くる？
Watashi wa gakkou ni iku. Issho ni kuru? – I’m going to school. Want to come along?
B: いま は いそがしい けど、あとで いく。
Ima wa isogashii kedo, ato de iku. – I’m busy now, but I’ll go later.

Say 10 sentences using わたし / あなた + は / を / に.

• わたし は にほんご を べんきょう する。
  Watashi wa nihongo o benkyou suru. – I study Japanese.

Combine きょう / あした / いま with いく / くる / たべる / のむ.

• きょう みず を のむ。
  Kyou mizu o nomu. – I drink water today.

Use がっこう / いえ / みせ + おおきい / ちいさい / あたらしい.

• あたらしい みせ に いく。
  Atarashii mise ni iku. – I’ll go to a new shop.
