The former French colony of Dahomey became independent on 1 August 1960 through decolonization. It was renamed Benin in 1975. A national conference in 1990 opened the way to a new constitution and multiparty elections.

Cotton farming and processing, commerce and transport are important activities. Cotonou’s port connects the country to regional trade, including trade with neighboring Nigeria.
