Georgia declared independence in 1918 before Soviet forces incorporated it into the USSR in 1921. It restored independence in 1991. Conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and war with Russia in 2008, have shaped its recent history; those areas remain outside the Georgian government’s control.
