Geography & languages

Physical geography

Mountainous northern coast (Rif Mountains) and interior (Atlas Mountains) bordered by large plateaus with intermontane valleys, and fertile coastal plains; the south is mostly low, flat desert with large areas of rocky or sandy surfaces.

Languages

Arabic and Tamazight are official languages. French is also widely used in business and public life.

Northern Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, between Algeria and Mauritania.

History & independence

Morocco regained independence in 1956 as French and Spanish protectorate arrangements ended after nationalist pressure and negotiations. Its monarchy has much older roots. Western Sahara remains a separate disputed territory whose final status is unresolved.
