History & independence

Senegal became independent from France as part of the Mali Federation on 20 June 1960. It withdrew from that federation in August 1960. Dakar has long served as a major Atlantic port and regional center.

Economy

Main activities

Services, agriculture, fishing, mining and industry contribute to the economy. Dakar is an important transport and commercial hub. Petroleum and gas production have added new activities to the export base.
