Uzbekistan is a country in Central Asia. Its capital is Tashkent.

Uzbek is the state language. Russian, Tajik, Karakalpak and other languages are also spoken; Karakalpak has official status in Karakalpakstan.

Uzbek territories came under Russian rule during the nineteenth century and became a Soviet republic in 1924. Uzbekistan gained independence in 1991. Soviet-era irrigation for cotton contributed to the shrinking of the Aral Sea; later reforms have sought to diversify production and improve regional links.
Gold, natural gas, textiles, agriculture, manufacturing and services are important. Cotton remains significant, while processing and industrial activity broaden the economy.
