History & independence

Cape Verde, officially Cabo Verde, became independent from Portugal on 5 July 1975 after the anti-colonial movement and Portugal’s 1974 revolution opened the way to negotiations. Multiparty politics replaced the one-party system at the beginning of the 1990s.
