The failed Bay of Pigs invasion damaged his administration early on. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, negotiation and a naval quarantine helped avoid nuclear war. Kennedy committed the country to landing a person on the Moon and established the Peace Corps. He proposed major civil-rights legislation in 1963, but it became law under Johnson after Kennedy’s assassination.
