The presidency
Nixon visited the People’s Republic of China in 1972, reopening high-level dialogue after decades of hostility. Formal diplomatic relations came later, under Carter in 1979. He also reached arms-control agreements with the Soviet Union and ended direct American combat involvement in Vietnam, while expanding the war into Cambodia. Watergate investigations ultimately led him to resign in August 1974.
