History & status

Tonga developed a unified monarchy in the nineteenth century and adopted a constitution in 1875. It became a British protected state in 1900 while retaining its monarchy and internal administration. Full control of external affairs returned in 1970. Political reforms in 2010 increased the number of popularly elected seats and changed how the Prime Minister is chosen.

Economy

Main activities

Remittances, agriculture, tourism and public services are important economic supports. Farming and fishing provide livelihoods, with products such as root crops, squash and fish entering trade. Small markets, imported fuel costs and exposure to cyclones and other natural hazards complicate economic planning.

Government

A constitutional monarchy. The King is head of state, and a Prime Minister leads the government. The Legislative Assembly includes popularly elected representatives and representatives of the nobles. The 2010 reforms expanded elected representation and parliamentary involvement in choosing the Prime Minister.
