The constitution recognizes Chewa, Chibarwe, English, Kalanga, Koisan, Nambya, Ndau, Ndebele, Shangani, Shona, sign language, Sotho, Tonga, Tswana, Venda and Xhosa.

Zimbabwe became internationally recognized as independent on 18 April 1980 after a liberation war, the Lancaster House agreement and elections. This followed the white-minority Rhodesian government’s unrecognized unilateral declaration of independence in 1965.
