Learn Katakana the Smart Way
The Verbacard™ Katakana Flashcard Deck helps you confidently recognize, read, and recall the entire Japanese Katakana script — the essential writing system used for foreign and loan words in Japanese.
Perfect for learners who want to read menus, signs, packaging, or everyday vocabulary, this 74-card deck makes memorization simple, logical, and effective.
Each card shows a clear Katakana character on the front, with a native example word on the back — helping you naturally connect sound, symbol, and meaning.
Why Katakana Matters
Japanese writing uses three scripts — Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.
Katakana is used mainly for:
Foreign loanwords (e.g., コーヒー kōhī → coffee)
Brand names and onomatopoeia
Emphasis, similar to italics in English
Learning Katakana early helps you read menus, train signs, product labels, and even manga with ease.
What Are Dakuten and Handakuten?
In addition to the basic Katakana characters, this set includes:
Dakuten (゛) — small marks that change the consonant sound (e.g., カ → ガ, サ → ザ).
Handakuten (゜) — small circles that soften the sound (e.g., ハ → パ).
Combination Pairs — characters that blend consonant + vowel sounds (e.g., キャ, シュ, チョ).
These variations expand Katakana from 46 base characters into over 70 sound patterns — and Verbacard makes them easy to recognize and remember.
Why Flashcards Are a Proven Learning Tool
Flashcards are backed by decades of cognitive and linguistic research showing that:
Active recall boosts long-term memory more effectively than passive reading.
Spaced repetition improves retention and recall speed.
Visual association strengthens language comprehension and pronunciation accuracy.
With Verbacard flashcards, you’re not just memorizing — you’re building neural connections that make reading and speaking Japanese second nature.

This box set is about the same size as two boxes of standard sized playing cards. The card quality is a bit less than a playing card, but feels reinforced more than thick paper. Moreso like a really thin playing card, or a card game that has lower quality cards. They are easy to read both on front and on back. They have the basic symbol on front, the word for the symbol on the back, and also words that use the symbol, so it can be used for vocab practice for romaji words that borrow from English and use Katakana as the symbols to spell them out.It has information on the use of the cards, and has a link to audio files to be able to hear how they are pronounced. These have been helpful in studying Katakana. They are better than any flash cards that I have ever tried to create for them. Having additional vocabulary on the back is helpful for learning how to read out and estimate romaji vocabulary as well. These cards make learning Katakana better, easier, and more enjoyable than when I was trying to learn it on my own before.
I love using these when I'm sitting on the couch and don't want to really watch whatever someone is watching on tv. Great quality and already learned a lot!
These flash cards are very nice. I like the sturdy box they came in. However, it does not stay closed without putting a band across it.The cards themselves are sturdy and slightly glossy, which helps in shuffling.I think these will be a very useful resource in learning Katakana as I have been trying to learn it for a while.I like how it offers ways to remember them by and reinforces that with the card. There is also a card with basic Japanese grammar concepts and audio files online. I wish those were downloadable, however and they don't really seem to be.Overall, I would recommend this product.
I'm obsessed with Japanese flash cards because although I use a lot of apps and watch a lot of language learning videos, the flash cards are great for when I want or need to be offline. They're also easy to use with my husband, so we can reinforce our learning by bouncing off each other with the cards. They're really good quality, thick, good size for handling, clear visual quality, and seem like they'll hold up to a lot of handling. The info on the cards is exactly what I was looking for with helping with Katakana because I started with Hiragana and haven't spent as much time with Katakana. You'll have to practice writing on your own, but the pronunciation and examples on the card are sufficient. I'm really happy with them and look forward to using them on train rides throughout Japan.
Very helpful set of cards to learn some basic Japanese. These cards are made of good quality cardstock, have clear print, and are portable enough to throw into my purse if I want to practice on the go. I like that there are multiple word examples to show how each character is used since it increases my vocabulary as well as helping me understand the sound. Simple, fun, and an easy way to start a journey into learning another language. Definitely recommend.
