Flat, swampy coastal plain; low mountains in south.

History & independence

Maya civilizations flourished in the region long before British settlement. The territory became British Honduras in 1862 and gained internal self-government in 1964. Negotiations led to independence on 21 September 1981. The territorial dispute with Guatemala is separate from Belize’s independence and remains subject to international legal proceedings.

Main activities

Tourism and agriculture are major activities. Marine attractions and Maya sites draw visitors, while sugar, bananas and citrus are important crops. Fishing, food processing and other services also contribute.

Government

A parliamentary constitutional monarchy. A Governor-General represents the monarch and a Prime Minister heads the government. The National Assembly has an elected House of Representatives and an appointed Senate.
