English settlement followed the 1609 wreck of the Sea Venture. Representative government developed early in the colonial period. Bermuda retained its connection to Britain, and voters rejected independence in a 1995 referendum. It remains a British Overseas Territory with extensive internal self-government.
International business, especially insurance and reinsurance, is central to the economy. Tourism, construction and professional services also contribute. Bermuda is in the North Atlantic, not the Caribbean Sea, although it is included in this card section.
