History & independence

Comoros declared independence from France on 6 July 1975. Mayotte remained under French administration, and Comoros continues to claim it. Constitutional arrangements adopted in 2001 sought to balance the powers of the union and its islands.

Economy

Main activities

Agriculture, fishing, commerce and remittances support the economy. Cloves, vanilla and ylang-ylang are notable exports. The islands depend on imported fuel and many manufactured goods.
