History & independence

Chad became independent from France on 11 August 1960. The following decades brought civil war and repeated changes of government. Oil exports began in 2003, changing the country’s economic base.

Economy

Main activities

Oil is a major export and revenue source. Livestock, cotton and food crops remain important for livelihoods. As a landlocked Sahel country, Chad depends on regional transport routes and is vulnerable to drought.
