History & independence

The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern part of Hispaniola, historically home to Taíno communities. Independence from Haitian rule was declared in 1844. Spain reannexed the country in 1861, but the Restoration War restored independence in 1865. The twentieth century included US occupation and the Trujillo dictatorship.
