History & independence
Honduras declared independence from Spain in 1821 and later became a separate republic after the Central American federation broke apart. Military governments dominated much of the twentieth century. Civilian constitutional government resumed in 1982. Hurricane Mitch caused extensive destruction in 1998.

Economy
Main activities
Agriculture, apparel manufacturing, trade and services are important activities. Coffee, bananas and other farm products contribute to exports, while remittances support households. The economy is vulnerable to storms and shifts in overseas demand.
