History & status

The Isle of Man passed through Norse, Scottish and English influence. The British Crown acquired the lordship in 1765, while the island retained its own institutions. It is a self-governing Crown Dependency, not part of the UK.

Economy

Main activities

Financial services, online gaming, professional services and specialist manufacturing are important. Tourism, farming and fishing also contribute. The island has its own tax system and close economic links with Britain.

Government
