Geography & languages

Physical geography

Upland plain (Deccan Plateau) in south, flat to rolling plain along the Ganges, deserts in west, Himalayas in north.

Hindi and English are used for Union government purposes. States have their own official-language arrangements; the constitution recognizes 22 scheduled languages.

Southern Asia, bordering the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, between Burma and Pakistan.

History & independence

India’s independence movement challenged British colonial rule through mass political organizing, civil disobedience and other forms of resistance. Independence in 1947 coincided with partition into India and Pakistan, causing mass displacement and violence. India’s constitution came into force in 1950, establishing a republic.
