History & status

Japan’s modern transformation accelerated with the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Defeat in the Second World War in 1945 was followed by Allied occupation and a new constitution in 1947. Sovereignty was restored in 1952, and rapid postwar industrial growth made Japan a major global economy.
