Indigenous peoples, including the Mapuche, shaped the region before Spanish colonisation. A governing junta formed in 1810, beginning the process toward independence. Independence was formally declared in 1818, and military victories secured the break with Spain. A military coup in 1973 began a dictatorship marked by severe human-rights abuses. Elected civilian government returned in 1990.
Copper mining is central to Chile’s exports, alongside lithium, fruit, wine, forestry products and seafood. Services account for a large part of domestic activity. Mining revenues are sensitive to global prices, while water scarcity, energy needs and environmental concerns influence production. Agriculture and aquaculture connect regional economies to overseas markets.
