What Is Kanji?

Kanji are the characters that carry meaning in Japanese, alongside the phonetic Hiragana and Katakana scripts. Unlike kana, each kanji represents an idea, and most have two kinds of readings: the on'yomi (Chinese-derived, used in compound words) and the kun'yomi (native Japanese).
